Portrait of a man, head and shoulders, turned slightly to left, looking to front and wearing a white collar. Features in very broad rapid strokes of brown, sanguine, blue and grey, with touches of white, laid directly beside one another, some dragged and interrupted, and completely unblended into the pale carnation ground; hair in very dark brown wash, the lights in pale grey and pale brown gouache; collar in pale grey wash, modelled in thick white; robe in dark grey wash with the lights in pale grey; background a sky in blue, grey, red and yellow gouache washes; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: A turned oval of ebonised fruitwood.
