Carved mother of pearl relief depicting the Resurrection, South Germany, late 15th century
Physical description
Carved mother of pearl relief depicting the Resurrection. Christ rises from the tomb giving the blessing, and holding in his left hand the staff with a cross and also a scroll. His garments are loosely draped. On the right are two soldiers asleep, one sitting with a cap on his head, the other, who has curling hair, lies extended on his back. On the left another soldier kneels in a helmet. In a background are seen hills, the Mount of Olives, and the towers of Jerusalem. The relief is convex and has a hole near the right margin.
