Costume for an unidentified character. Long skirted tunic of pale blue brocade, the skirt box pleated onto a low waist. Full length sleeves with a puff on the upper arm, attached on a diagonal seam to the widish fitted lower sleeve. The front is cut into a long narrow V to the waist, the round neck and the V outlined in a band of Royal blue wool crepe edged with narrow gold Russia braid. Inset into the V is a pleated 'shirt front' of off white cotton, the sides pleated outwards from the centre. The front is pleated into a high stand up collar. Around the hem of the tunic is a band of royal blue wool crepe edged with narrow gold Russia braid. Around the waist is fixed a loose belt of royal blue wool crepe decorated with two spaced rows of gold braid.

Object history | Tunic for an unidentified character in Rosella Hightower's ballet 'Henry VIII and his Wives' performed by the Markova-Dolin Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, ?17th October 1947. The music for the ballet was arranged by Robert Zeller after works by Rossini, and the scenery and costumes were designed by Russell Hartley. |
