Coffer

Cedar coffer, carved with countersunk ornament on a red ground and inlaid on the sides with strips of walnut. The mounts are iron.
The panel on the front, the two stiles and the front of the shaped base are carved with foliated stems, partly interlacing, and the front and side edges of the lid with a band of lozenges. Each side of the coffer is inlaid with a geometrical design, in the hinge centre of which hangs a drop handle with quaterfoil plates. Inside are two long hinge-bands with leaf-shaped terminations, partly pierced, and in front is a lock with a catch.
The colouring is modern.

Object history
Purchased from Messrs. Rabb & Knapp (Antiquarian dealers), 5 Alter Markt, Frankfurt, Germany, for 150 marks (37 7s 4d). A communication received 27th June 1904 from Knapp (preserved on the registered file) notes that 'The smaller [chest came from] (Tyrol) from the Leuprertz's auction, Cologne (Steukels of Dusseldorf collection).
