Leaf with initial showing the Coronation of the Virgin, probably from a choir psalter or psalter-hymnal, Italian (probably Ferrara), ca. 1490-1500. A duplicate number MS.1040 was assigned to this object in error and was subsequently cancelled.

The Psalms

Graduals and antiphonaries only provided the sung
parts of church services, so other books were needed
to complement them, such as psalters. The psalter
contains the psalms – the biblical book whose recitation
is at the heart of the liturgꢀ. Here the initial ‘D’
encloses the Coronation of the Virgin, and the border
includes realistic portraits of men who were probably
involved in commissioning this book.
