Les Halles Centrales was a large indoor market area in Paris. The original building, commemorated by this medal, was destroyed during the First World War and replaced in 1923.

Physical description

Bronze medal commemorating the inauguration of Les Halles Paris in 1857. On the obverse a bird's eye view of the 'Halles Centrales de Paris', above which Mercury and Ceres are flying; 'Pose de la Premre pierre MDCCCLI. Inauguration MDCCCLVII. Battard et Callet architectes.' On the reverse a tablet with the inscription, surrounded by various symbols. Signed 'Bovy'.
