Strong, Roy. Artists of the Tudor Court: the Portrait Miniature Rediscovered 1520-1620. London: The Victoria and Albert Museum, 1983.Cat. 156, p 106. Part Citation:"Although very faded, this was once a marvellous portrait of a lady with Oliver’s typical post-Italian motif of the enigmatic smile. The miniature has been clipped, which accounts for its tight feeling, especially where the hair is cut into. Graham Reynolds’ dating of c. 1590 seems therefore too early: style and presentation would indicate a date after the Italian visit to be more correct. It does not, however, belong to the very last years of the reign when gauze puffs were worn to edge the ruff-line. The necklace incorporates a repeating letter S. A second version exists with a variant costume in the Mauritshuis."
