Portrait of a man, half-length, turned to right, looking to front and wearing a long wig and neckcloth. Features loosely hatched and stippled in brown and sanguine with white heightening, blue and black in the eyes and a white highlight, on a pale carnation ground; hair in brown wash, hatched and stippled with darker colour, and with gouache heightening over the carnation; robe in pale brown washed over with darker colour, stippled and heightened with white; shirt and cravat in pale brown wash modelled in white; background to the left a dense brown wash; to the right a sky in opaque washes, hatched and heightened; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Seventeenth-century oval gold locket, convex back, the sides with a central channel, flaring out to the bezel which holds the convex glass by its bevelled edges; traces of solder remain where the original hanger and spirals would have been attached. The inside packed out with fragments of playing cards (all diamonds). Lightly scratched on the back: General/ Charles Churchill/ Brother of John/ Duke of Malborough/ by / [Dixon].
