This is a carved ivory parasol handle, which contains a standing cupid holding a bow underneath the curve of the handle. It is made by Jean-Pascal François Norest in Paris in 1859. Norest (1822-1870) trained as an ivory carver in Dieppe from about 1840 until 1846, when he left for Paris.

Physical description | Carved ivory parasol handle, with an acanthus leaf design containing under the curve of the handle a standing Cupid holding a bow. From a short circular stem, crowned with an irregular capital formed of acanthus leaves and a volute, rises a scroll carved on the whole length inside with an acanthus leaf; within stands a nude cupid on a short scroll rising from the base of the larger one; he holds a bow in his right hand and supports himself by leaning on the upper extremity of the larger scroll with his left hand which holds an arrow. |
