Berenice Abbott (1898–1991)
Hardware Store
1938
Between 1935 and 1939, the Federal Art Project employed Abbott to make a series of photographs entitled Changing New York, documenting the rapid development and urban transformation of the city. This picture shows the façade of a downtown hardware store, its wares arranged in a densely-packed window display which extends beyond the shop itself and onto the pavement. [58]
