Object history
Excavated by labourers when building barracks on the site of an old pagoda east of the Shwe Dagon, Rangoon in 1855. It is possible that the bowl originally contained the ashes of Queen Sh in Sawbu (1453-1472). Found in the same excavation as the model pagoda - 02755(IS) and the ceremonial helmet - 02758(IS).

This is a reliquary bowl, made of solid gold and without ornamentation of any kind. Its simplicity makes it look contemporary in design and as an object of Mon-Shan metalwork, it is pleasing. However, if the ordinary person in Pegu at the time never possessed such vessels, they are typical of court art of the great Mon kingdom of the south.
Production
Excavated by labourers when building barracks on the site of an old pagoda east of the Shwe Dagon, Rangoon, in 1855. There is an opinion that the bowl originally contained the ashes of Queen Shin Sawbu (1453-1472)
