Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a panel relief of Caen stone carved in high relief, purchased from W. M. Holmes, presumed to be the sculptor, in England. This relief was an entry for the Society of Arts Competition for Art-Workmen in 1866. The sculptor appears to have been influenced by the naturalistic carvers of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century such as Grinling Gibbons.

Holmes was a carver by trade, based in Soho, and unusually for an entrant in the Art-Workmanship Competition made this piece to his own design.
