Bibliographic reference | Goldblatt, David. The Transported of Kwandebele. A South African Odyssey. New York: Aperture, 1989. Illustrated p. 15. Accompanying text on p. 14 reads:
'At about 2:40 A.M. a line for the earliest bus forms near a resettlement camp in the bush of KwaNdebele on the Boekenhouthoek-Marabastad route. The distance between the resettlement camps of KwaNdebele and the bus terminal at Marabastad in Pretoria, is between 100 and 160 kilometers (between about 62 and 99 miles). Depending on which camp commuters travel from, and provided that there are no breakdowns, the journey to Pretoria might take them anything from 1.8 to 3.2 hours. But since many workers take onward transport for up to another hour to get to their place of work, the whole journey might take up to about 4 hours. Thus the commuting workers of KwaNdebele spend between about 3 1/2 and 8 hours a day travelling to and from work.' |
