The misty atmosphere in this photograph transforms the logo of the Mobil oil company into a luminous depiction of the Greek mythical creature Pegasus. The car in the foreground and the slice of harshly lit service station interior are reminders of the prosaic setting, off a motorway in
New York State. Mayes has an ongoing fascination with the American road and has made numerous photographs on the subject throughout her long career, sometimes from a moving car.
