Object history
Costume for Mattachins worn in Frederick Ashton's ballet 'Capriol Suite', which was originally performed by the Rambert Dancers at the Lyric Theatre, London, 25th February 1930. The music for the ballet was composed by Peter Warlock on themes from Thoinot Arbeau's Orchesographie, and the costumes and scenery were designed by William Chappell. First performance by Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet (now Royal Ballet) in a revised version was at Sadler's Wells Theatre on 5th October 1948.

'Mattachins' was performed at the Gala Tribute to Frederick Ashton at the Royal Opera House on 24 July 1970, when one of the dancers was Wayne Sleep. The dance was also included in the Ballet For All production of 'The Birth of the Royal Ballet', first performed on 13th October 1972, at the Spa Theatre, Felixstowe.
