Place of origin |
This collage by Sara Fanelli was made for an exhibition at the AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale) meeting in Paris in 2001. The Italian-born, London-based Fanelli is a well-established illustrator. She has been nominated for and won several illustration awards, including the V&A Illustration Award. She creates prints, book illustrations and collages.
‘Fluctuat nec Mergitur’ (It floats it does not sink) is the motto of the city of Paris, and found on the city’s coat of arms. Inspired by this, Fanelli shows the Eiffel tower as a creature with wings and eyes, hopping in the air. This image exemplifies Fanelli’s visual style and her joyful use of colourful elements combined with a slightly surreal, naive edge. It also illustrates her interest in collage, which is inspired by artists such as Henri Matisse.
