Place of origin |
Woodman has documented performances by American performance artists such as Tina Girouard, depicted here swimming at Galveston Beach. The original shot was made using 4×5 inch Polaroid positive/negative film. The unique positive Polaroid image was then re-photographed and printed at a larger scale. The imperfections on the surface of the Polaroid merge with the reflections on the surface of the water to create a multi-layered image.
After having studied under Ezra Stoller and Minor White, Woodman worked as a scientific photographer at a solar observatory. He continued his studies under George Krause and married Judy Chicago in the 1980s. His photographs feature in her autobiographical works such as My Accident (1986) and Eve in the Garden at 70 (2009).
