Portrait, head and shoulders, slightly to left and looking to front; the sitter is wearing armour and a neckcloth tied in a bow. Features firmly hatched in brown and sanguine with some blue, yellow and green (see Condition), and white heightening, on a pale yellowish carnation ground; hair in pale brown wash hatched in darker brown and the lights in pale yellow; armour in grey washes with white heightening and metallic gold for the studs; cravat in very pale grey wash modelled in white; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table- book.
Frame: Twentieth-century gilt-metal composite locket; a plain convex back with straight sides, into which fits a half-round front piece of a different gilding, forming a rebate for the convex glass; the hanger is an oval cut from laminated sheet of thick gauge, with flat sides, two projections and a flattened ball finial.
