The British Air Ministry sought to design a sophisticated high-speed fighter plane to respond to the new capabilities of the German Luftwaffe. R J Mitchell, who served as Chief Designer and his successor, Joseph Smith developed the prototype called Spitfire. Around 1938 the aircraft started being produced for use by the Royal Air Force.
