‘The Sirens’
1899
As well as drawing from life models, art students used photographs to hone their skills in rendering the nude. Here, the fleshy bodies and wavy hair create lines that stand out against the contrasting background textures. The photograph was made using the platinum process, which created a wide tonal range. The title refers to the mythological creatures whose singing lured unwary sailors onto rocks.
