The General Post Office launched and continued an extremely successful poster campaign throughout the mid-twentieth century in order to advertise the services it provided as well as to shape public perception of the organisation. In 1934, the GPO even formed the short-lived Poster Advisory Group to help create representative images and striking graphic design.

This poster establishes a historical narrative by presenting a scene of mail delivery in 1833 via ship and covered wagon.
