Small card-mounted portraits called cartes de visite were particularly collectible. They were often compiled in albums or traded among friends. Many cartes de visite depicted public figures – here international heads of state. This group shows kings, queens, princes and heirs from Java, part of modern day Indonesia. The album shows how one collector formed a systematic photographic survey of royalty from around the world.
