Sauce Tureen and Cover

The sauce tureen was a type of tureen, similar to but smaller than a soup tureen for serving sauce or hot gravy and first made its appearance in silver during the reign of George I. The bowl is usually of oval or canoe shape, having at each end a curved loop handle rising above the rim and with a domed cover with a finial, sometimes in the form of a lifting ring.

Physical description
Sauce tureen and cover. Silver, oval with rising loop handles. Maker's mark I. The foot and edge gadrooned; the handles chased with foliage; the domed cover surmounted by a spray of leaves with a nut. Engraved with the crest of Gill, co. Devon with the motto: IN TE DOMINE SPES NOSTRA (Our hope is in you, O Lord), replacing an earlier coat of arms, within garlands and palm branches.
