'Clementina, Lady Hawarden (Untitled) Photographic Study (or) Study from Life (D.238) c.1859-c.1861 5 Princes Gardens, interior: first floor, rear: cloth backdrop: rug: Charles, seated, and Robert Bontine (later Cunninghame Graham), standing, right hand on Charles' right shoulder. Inscription (verso): No 89 85 x 148 mm (stereoscopic) PH 457-1968:479 Literature: Microfilm: 3.19.472 Robert and his younger brother Charles were the sons of Lady Hawarden's sister, Anne Bontine. Although this photograph is not inscribed, the boys have been identified through similar photographs by Lady Hawarden which are in a family carte-de-visite album [private collection]. After their father's death their surname became Bontine Cunninghame Graham. Robert was a famous writer and politician; Charles had a distinguished naval career. See A.F. Tschiffely, Don Roberto, London 1937; Cedric Watts and Laurence Davies, Cunninghame Graham: A Critical Biography, Cambridge 1979. The clearly visible fingerprint suggests that someone--possibly Lady Hawarden--attempted to smooth out the long scratch on the negative before printing. For a portrait of their father, William C. Bontine, see Ph 4571968:198 (D.240); for a portrait of their mother, see Ph 4571968:320 (D.365).After their father's death their surname became Bontine Cunninghame Graham.
