Inscription (verso): No 22; Inscription (verso of mount): (X614-)22 236 x 251 mm PH 266-1947 Series 126 Literature: Microfilm: 3.18.2 People in Camera, National Portrait Gallery, 19 These comments relate to photographs D.651 to D.656. The poses and costumes in these photographs may have been inspired by the sensational appearance of the young actress Kate Bateman in the play Leah, produced in London in late 1863, Similarities can be seen rn-a wood engraving of the actress in this role published in London Society in November 1863; cartes' de-visite were also available.'
