Plateau, silver-gilt, in the centre a convex medallion, engraved with a coat of arms and two crests. Round this are four medallions of classical warriors on horseback with a roccoco scroll border.

  • Engraved with a coat of arms and two crests: engraved achievement in the centre, Quarterly 1 & 4, Silver on a cross Sable, a leopard's face Gold (Brydges); 2 & 3 Silver a saltaire and on a chief Gules a canton Silver thereon a lion rampant Azure (Bruce); over all a scocheon pheons Silver (Nicol). Duke's coronet; Supporters, two otters Silver at the sides two crests: (a) a Man's head and shoulders, (b) a garb. (The arms are those of James (third and last) Duke of Chandos and his first wife Margaret, heiress of John Nicol of Southgate, Middlesex. They were married March 22, 1753 and she dies August 14, 1768 without issue. He died, having remarried, without male issue, September 29, 1789)
Object history
This dish was made for the 3rd Duke of Chandos (died 1789) to make a pair with a South German dish of about 1630-50. The auricular ornament incorporates masks and monsters. It was probably carried out by one of the several German chasers working in 18th century London.
