Etched into one side of the glass is a prancing horse, while the other side has a diminishing lens. This goblet illustrates the technique of relief cutting of cased glass, known as Überfang Relief-schnitt, where subtle shading is determined by the depth to which the overlay is removed. The label on base is that of L'Escalier de Cristal, LAHOCHE, a shop in Paris that specialised in the decorative arts.
