The sauce tureen was a type of tureen, similar to but smaller than a soup tureen for serving sauce or hot gravy and first made its appearance in silver during the reign of George I. The bowl is usually of oval or canoe shape, having at each end a curved loop handle rising above the rim and with a domed cover with a finial, sometimes in the form of a lifting ring.

Physical description

One of a pair. Silver, oval, urn shaped body with reeded handles and cover with urn shaped knob. Fluting on the upper part of the cover, lower part of the body and around the foot.
