Cocke, 'Some late drawings by Pier Francesco Mola' in Master Drawings, 10, no. 1, 1972, p. 27, pl. 24; Exhibition Catalogue, Master Drawings of the Roman Baroque from the Kunstmuseum, Dusseldorf, London and Edinburgh, 1973, under no. III Cocke publishes two other drawings by Mola of the same composition: the one in Paris, Ecole des Beaux Arts, pl. 22; the other in Oxford, Ashmolean Museum, pl. 23. No corresponding picture is known. Dieter Graf in the exhibition catalogue cited compares the drawing, so far as the painterly handling is concerned, with the sheet at Dusseldorf showing Erminia with the shepherd, which he considers to be a late work.
