Stanmer Church, Sussex

Watercolour
25/09/1834 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This watercolour painting by John Martin is thought to show a church in Stanmer Park, an estate village between Brighton and Lewes in Sussex. However, the 3rd Earl of Chichester, Henry Thomas Pelham, decided to demolish the existing church in 1838, replacing it with a new building in the Early English style. Martin's painting is clearly dated 25 September 1834, so it may represent the earlier church on the same site.
