The inscription had been read Findon (Sussex) until Key, p. 54, pointed out that the scene represented is the churchyard of St. Mary's, Hendon.
Note on Nos. 164, 166, 167, 168, and 170 [267-1888, 264-1888, 276-1888, 275-1888, 307-1888]
Nos. 164, 166, 167, and 168 [267-1888, 264-1888, 276-1888, 275-1888] evidently come from the same sketch-book, measuring 4 x 5 ¼ ins. (100 x 134 mm.) and used in 1818. No. 170 [307-1888] may, for the reasons given above, come from the same source. |
