Gallery label
ANONYMOUS Broadside: Sun of Righteousness. c. 1825-30 Printed by J. Catnach, 7 Dials, London. Price Twopence Wood engraving and letterpress E.46-1986 From the late 18th century various religious societies published cheap illustrated tracts and text boooks for the rapidly growing numbers of Sunday schools in an effort to try and replace the perceived immoral or potentially radical broadsheets with religious texts. J. Catnach and J. Pitts did not miss this commercial opportunity and began printing their own cheap religious chapbooks and broadsides, experiencing particularly brisk trade at Christmas. The actual images were often derived from 16th and 17th century religious paintings, in particular baroque images of the Redemption.
