Aspargus tongs are recorded in the 17th century but the earliest to have survived date from the mid 18th century. This style with iuts scissor-like action, is earlier than the U-shaped examples which became more common later and might also have been used for chops or steak. Silver had the advantage that it did discolour the asparagus or taint the butter sauce.
