In this woodcut Paul Rene Gauguin (1911-1976) makes uses of different patterns of woodgrain to reflect sky and sea, and shaped blocks combined with a fine line for the other elements. Gauguin was a Norwegian painter and sculptor primarily, who learned the woodcut printmaking technique in the early 1930s whilst on fishing trips in the Mediterranean.
