To create this print the artist Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988) used two shaped plates: a smaller disc printed in orange and a shaped plate in black for the stones. The shapes of the platemarks can be clearly seen impressed into the paper. Trevelyan combined hand-drawn needle marks with open bite techniques. For the orange sun, he used sugar lift aquatint of a coarse grain. The larger shaped plate was printed in black, with pale grey achieved by a light surface-tone of ink left on the plate after wiping. The henge’s rough appearance is creve – patches of closely drawn lines that have been over-etched.
