Gallery label
CUP Silver-gilt, with silver cagework London, 1669-70 Mark GC monogram perhaps for Gerard Cooqus This cagework presentation cup may be from the workshop of the famous Utrecht goldsmith, Christian van Vianen, who returned to London in 1660 to work for Charles II. His partner, Gerard Cooqus, was a royal silversmith and made a set of bedroom furniture for Nell Gwyn. Silver cost about five shillings an ounce. The charge for 'fashion' or workmanship varied with the time and skill required. The elaborate cagework would have raised the cost of this piece but the rich contrasts created between the 'white' silver and the gilding underneath would have been much admired. 290-1854
Production
Examination with Alastair Dickinson and Philippa Glanville in May 1989 concluded that the following features are unusual for this date; the feet are pinned on; the handles are bolted on to the cage work (normally soldered at this date) and there is no domed nut for fastening the lid.
