Crying woman

Print
1963 (published)
Artist/Maker

Lichtenstein famously used the formula of the Ben Day dot, a method of colouring printed illustrations by overlaying small coloured dots in regular formations to produce colour and tonal variation. This was a formula used to produce colour illustrations in cheap popular comics and magazines, and in advertising and packaging. Lichtenstein appropriated and enlarged the pattern to create images which appear to both parody and celebrate contemporary life, industrial and consumer culture.
