Banknotes worth millions Following the First World War, Germany suffered from hyperinflation as a result of having to pay war reparations. To cope, the government issued more money, leading to a drastic decline in the value of the German currency. As its value dropped, higher denominations needed to be designed urgently. Herbert Bayer, then a student at the Bauhaus art school, created these new notes, each with values of several million. As inflation continued to soar, these notes quickly became obsolete. Emergency money 1923 Designed by Herbert Bayer Issued by Thüringische Staatsbank, Germany Colour lithograph Museum nos.
