Following the First World War, Germany suffered from hyperinflation as a result of having to pay war reparations. To cope, the government issued more money, leading to a drastic decline in the value of the German currency. As its value dropped, higher denominations needed to be designed urgently. Herbert Bayer, then a student at the Bauhaus art school, created these new notes, each with values of several million. As inflation continued to soar, these notes quickly became obsolete.
