Lamentation over the Dead Christ

Plaquette
ca. 1600 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This large plaquette depicts a scene from the Passion, the Lamentation over the dead Christ. Although it is almost certainly inspired by Italain depictions of this scene, and indeed may well be based on an Italian engraved source, its emotive style suggests it was probably made in Spain by an unknown artist. Spanish sculptors were influenced by the work of Pompeo Leoni, a Milanese sculptor who worked in bronze, and who came to work for Philip II at the Escorial in the late sixteenth century.
