This painted terracotta statuette represents the beatified Mariana de Jesús (1564/5-1624), who lived and worked in Madrid, helping the poor of the city as a member of the Mercedarian Order. It is a reduced version of a life size polychromed wood statue of Beata Mariana, which is in the church of Santiago in Madrid; the face of that statue is based on a death mask. Many other representations were made of this holy woman during the second half of the eighteenth century, including a number of engravings.

Statuette in painted terracotta, depicting Beata Mariana de Jesus. The figure stands with outstretched arms with head is inclined to the left and down. She is clad in white robes with a cross and shield at the breast and sandals on the feet. The figure stands on a black base. The fingers of the right hand are missing while the thumb of the left hand is missing.
