The puppet represents a Maori tribal figure, thought to have been originally used in rituals and now used in festivals and entertainments. This example was commissioned from a Maori craftsman by R.V. Albon, a New Zealand member of the British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild, who presented it to the Guild
