Lewis lived in Spain from 1832-1833. There he produced a series of drawings and brilliantly coloured watercolours of Spanish life. Lewis also produced a series of lithographs of the Alhambra, one of the best-preserved examples of Islamic architecture in Spain. A number of the preliminary drawings survive and this is one of them.

They show his great skill in rendering accurately, and in perspective, the fine detail of the intricate Islamic decoration. Ho achieved this without the use of any drawing aids.
