A self taught artist, Walter Crane was apprenticed to W.J. Linton in London in 1857. He contributed to the development of the illustrated book more than any other contemporary artist, focusing on books for children. His style was drawn from sources including illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and Japanese prints as well as Pre-Raphaelite art.

This is one of a series of six illustrations to 'The Little Mermaid' (1836) by Hans Christian Anderson (1805-75) Here the mermaid is shown visiting the surface for the first time, on the occasion of her fifteenth birthday. Fine horizontal lines and washes of blue and green create a watery effect.
