Materials and Techniques

Brush in varying shades of brown, heightened with white, over black chalk, on yellow tinted paper; some of the chalk lines on the original sheet of paper have been incised.

Marks and inscriptions

Inscribed by Rubens at lower right, in pale brown ink, Annibal Carracci (surname difficult to read); on verso, at top, in brown ink (with Richardson sen.’s shelfmarks), Zd.41 / ZC; and below this, in graphite, Portions of Intr. Dec. of the Farnese Palace Rome / by Annibale Carracci / The subject of Leda being substituted / for that of Apollo and Marsyas.
