VASE 4422-1901 'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' The technique of pressing glass in a mould was developed in the U.S.A. in the 1820s, and not only made the production of glass much cheaper, but also permitted complex relief decoration, as in this case. The stippled background was necessary in the early stages to hide the dullness caused by the glass chilling in the mould. The design for this vase incorporating matting and rocailles was published in 1840, and called, astonishingly, "Etruscan". Launay, Hautin et Cie were the agents for the Bercy, Choisy, Baccarat and St. Louis glassworks. Transferred from the Museum of Practical Geology, Jermyn St.(1987-2006)
