This statuette is a wax sketch model representing David by an unknown artist, made ca. 1580 in Florence.
It was formerly thought to be a study by Michelangelo for the marble David.
Considered as a first sketch for the lost and colossal bronze statue of David, commissioned in 1502 and placed near the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio, in Florence.
The model is actually too damaged to be precisely attributable. Both arms are missing just below the shoulder.
