A LEAF FROM A ROUEN BOOK OF HOURS About 1500 At the heart of the Book of Hours were the Hours of the Virgin. Although for a lay audience, the books followed the traditional 'hours' into which religious institutions structured their devotions. The Nativity was the standard illustration for Prime, the third 'hour', at about 6 in the morning. France, Rouen Ink on parchment, pigment and gold Inscribed in Latin, 'O God, come to my assistance; O Lord make haste to help me (Psalm 69) Museum no. 9004J (24/03/2018)

Part of cuttings purchased in batches from William Henry James Weale in 1883, 95 on 9 April 1883, 258 on 17 April 1883, 20 on 20 February, for the total sum of £96.7.2 (now Museum nos 8972-9042).
