Hunt was nicknamed 'Bird's Nest Hunt' because of his liking for this subject. His still lifes show minute detail and intense colours. Plums belongs to a collection of mainly Victorian watercolours assembled by Richard Ellison. His widow gave them to the V&A soon after its foundation, with an additional bequest in 1873.
