Jacopo Tintoretto 1518-1594 Christ on the Cross Probably 1560s Tintoretto was one of the principal Venetian painters of his generation. Like other 16th century artists, he used coloured chalks in preference to pen and ink to express a broader sense of form. This is a preparatory study for a large oil painting. It has been 'squared off' to facilitate the transfer of the image to the canvas. Black chalk, heightened with white, on paper Bequeated by Alexander Dyce 1689 Museum no. Dyce 235(2011)
